Conficker Worm

There has been much news lately about the Conficker worm and the impending impact on networks and the Internet. Today is April 1st and the day that the latest version of the Conficker worm is scheduled to activate. The worm can turn off antivirus programs, block access to security web sites and slow your computer down.

As always, the St. Olaf College Telephone Office will monitor the network for performance affecting issues. If you own or operate a Windows PCs, then you should have Windows Updates running automatically and should have up-to-date Anti-Virus. Symantec has a very good explanation of the Conficker worm, how it operates, its effects, and what to do if you become infected. This site includes a downloadable scanner.

NOTE: If you suspect that your computer is infected, and you cannot access the Symantec website above, then there is a chance that your computer may be affected. The Symantec website is expected to be blocked from infected machines.

If you have questions or concerns, there are several good news sources: Google News, Yahoo!, and Symantec. Each of these sites will be following the latest news, as will most news outlets. If you have any questions or concerns, as always you can call the St. Olaf College Telephone Office at 507-786-8888.
